Rapid prototyping is done by the aid of computer programs. These computer programs are capable of constructing three dimensional models which are derived from computer aided design drawings. The prototyping process is used to turn product designs into physical samples quickly and easily. The creation of physical samples is done or achieved by portable document format or PDF or CAD formats. There are cross functional teams which interact their designs and then make use of prototyping. The process of rapid prototyping was introduced in the late eighties. The initial stage of development was that of stereo lithography. It is known as solid free form fabrication as well or three dimension printing. There are other terms to refer to such form of prototyping such as additive fabrication or free form fabrication. There are three dimensional printers which are used to construct physical models in the process of rapid prototyping. The prototyping is done with the help of stereo lithography machines or laser sintering systems that construct physical models. CAD drawing helps to create a physical prototype. That is a process which is simple for the user. The machine first reads the data that is provided by the CAD drawing. The machine then lays a combination or powdered or liquid materials in successive layers. The material used in stereolithography use ceramics, plastic, paper and metals such as titanium or stainless steel. The method of prototyping uses stereolithography to build rapid layers. These are built to match the virtual cross sections which are taken from the CAD models. The final models are built gradually and then cross sections are created. The cross sections are then glued together. They are fused with the help of laser. This then gives the final shape to the object. In the process of rapid prototyping models are created quickly for presentation to clients. This is a process used by engineers and architects. The design cycle time is reduced by such process. Multiple tests can be performed to change and perfect designs and that too at low costs. Every prototype can be completed within hours or days instead of weeks which would be the time taken by other traditional modeling methods. There are other professionals who can benefit by the use of prototyping or stereolithography such as artists, archaeologists and surgeons. The manufacturing method of stereolithography helps in 3D printing by building layers on layers. This is done with the help of lasers and liquid resin. It is a type of additive manufacturing process. There are stereolithography apparatuses that perform such a process and the designs are typically made with the help of specialized computer aided design program. These machines are mostly used along with rapid prototyping projects.
